Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about VTyper. If you still need help, our team is easy to reach.
What is VTyper?
VTyper is a system-level voice typing input method engine for Linux. It allows you to dictate text anywhere on your system—from terminal commands to web browsers, code editors to chat applications—using advanced speech recognition technology.
How many languages does VTyper support?
VTyper supports 100+ languages with instant translation capabilities. This includes major languages like English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and many more.
How does VTyper compare to other voice typing tools?
Unlike cross-platform tools like Wispr Flow or Windows-only solutions like Dragon, VTyper is built from the ground up for Linux. This means native IBus integration, system-wide functionality, and zero configuration setup. You can dictate anywhere without switching contexts.
Is my voice data private?
Yes. VTyper does not store your voice recordings or recognized text on our servers. Voice data is processed in real-time and immediately discarded. Your audio goes directly to the ASR provider with anonymized session tokens.
Which Linux distributions are supported?
VTyper supports all major Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, openSUSE, and their derivatives. As long as your system uses IBus as the input method framework, VTyper should work seamlessly.
Do I need an internet connection to use VTyper?
VTyper supports both cloud and offline processing. Cloud mode offers the highest accuracy and uses fewer system resources, while offline mode provides maximum privacy and works without an internet connection.
How accurate is the speech recognition?
VTyper uses state-of-the-art AI speech recognition models optimized for accuracy and speed. It achieves over 95% accuracy for clear speech and supports continuous learning to adapt to your voice patterns over time.
Can I use VTyper with any application?
Yes! Since VTyper operates at the system level through IBus, it works with virtually any application that accepts text input—browsers, IDEs, terminals, office suites, messaging apps, and more.
Does VTyper work with my microphone?
VTyper works with any microphone recognized by your Linux system - built-in laptop microphones, USB microphones, headset mics, and Bluetooth devices. For best results, we recommend a dedicated USB microphone.
Can I customize VTyper's behavior?
Yes. VTyper offers various customization options including hotkey configuration, language selection, auto-punctuation settings, and personal dictionary management. Premium users get access to advanced customization features.
How do I activate voice typing?
You can activate VTyper using a customizable keyboard shortcut (default is Shift). Once activated, simply start speaking and your words will appear wherever your cursor is positioned.
How much does VTyper cost?
VTyper will be available as a free download with optional premium features for power users. Our goal is to make voice typing accessible to everyone while providing advanced capabilities for those who need them.
